This small mask from the Hemba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was not intended to be worn on the face but by hand, given its dimensions. It is a passport mask. In Hemba African art, masks of this type, called Soko Mutu or So'o Mutu, featured the great monkey. This one is encrusted with kaolin.
