This small mask from the Hemba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was not intended to be worn on the face but by hand, given its dimensions. It is a passport mask. In Hemba African art, masks of this type, called Soko Mutu or So’o Mutu, featured the great monkey. This one is encrusted with kaolin.
The Dan tribe, also known as the Gio or the Yakuba tribe, is an ethno-linguistic group of people who inhabit the mountainous city west-downtown and nearby areas of Liberia. The Dan belong to the southern region in the Manda linguistic subgroup of the Nigerian-Congo language family. Their actual origin is somewhere west or west of their present lands, probably among the Malinka (Mendingo).
The Danes are closely related to the Jara (also Najar buckwheat, or Guara) from the south.
